Toni Childs……………I Walked Out

I love the theatre in most forms. I love music in most forms, so over the years I have been to many plays and concerts and I can say with all honesty that I have never walked out of a live performance by anyone.  Oops I tell a lie. Years ago I walked out of a play called Steaming. Funny thing was, later I was to become very good friends with one of the actresses on that play.

You see, I know what it is to perform to an audience as I have to do it often, but tonight I walked out of a concert in Brisbane Australia that was by the American singer Toni Childs, who is now a resident of Australia I might add. It was just terrible and I have seen her before and just love her big voice. I have most, if not all of her CD’s and I was/am a fan but tonight she put up trash.

It would appear that she had a problem with her voice for she was sucking a lolly and drinking from a cup all the time but the music was just so loud, to the point it was giving me a headache and then she wanted to talk about her life and her Virgina and lots of personal stuff. Now that is fine for a bit but to sit on the stage bare foot and go on and on about it was a real pain. Personally I thought she was off her trolley.

So for only the second time in my life I got up and walked out and when I got to the foyer, I was to find that I was not the only one. Others were complaining and leaving as well. Now without a doubt the woman has a fantastic voice and that is what I paid to hear, not a load of poppycock about  her life in a valley for ten years where she used to brush her teeth in a spring. Oh please give me a break woman. Sing the songs I paid good money to hear and leave the airy fairy stuff to some other person who is perhaps at the bottom of the garden.

I might also add that the audience was quite small to start with and as I looked around the theatre before she came on stage I started to feel sorry for her but perhaps the word is out that she is these days a bit of a nutter. I am sure that there would be some who would have just loved her but it was not for this boy so away I went.

Now to Monday morning and my attempt to get a refund, wish me luck.

I was informed by the theatre that put on the Toni Childs concert that I would be hearing from her management. That was over a week ago and still nothing. Do I expect someone to call or email me. NO. They have my money but the interesting thing is that because I am so widely followed I did not think for one minute that there would be anyone reading my blog that was at the same concert as me but “Alas” I was wrong.

I am told by several people who have Facebook,  that if they posted something that was negative about the concert on the Toni Childs web site it had been removed. Gee Ms Childs, you come from the country that believes in free speech as I recall.

Your management and you obviously want to avoid the facts and truth and just move on. Not exactly what I would suggest is buyer satisfaction situation to be had here, but it is funny how these things come back to bite us in the bum if we put our head in the sand.

Now you may be able to remove what someone puts on Facebook but you can not remove what I write either here or in the printed media and as you have not followed through and called me, you will be happy to know that I am followed world wide.

  1. Toni Childs is nothing but a parasite, takes advantage of vulnerable people for her own benefit. I’m guessing you still didn’t get a refund after all this time….

My mother and her good friend went to the Toni Childs concert in Bundaberg on Sunday just gone. They were so excited, when I called her to see how it went the first thing she said was ‘We walked out.’ How disappointing!
Everything else she described has been said above, sounds like she does it at every concert. Rambling about how she smoked pot back in the day blah blah blah sounds to me like she is still out of it!
    So very disappointing Toni Childs

I went to the Toni Childs concert in Toowoomba on 3 July 19. Have been a fan for 25 years. When she sang she was fabulous. I like hearing about the stories behind songs, but she took this to the next level! I’d describe it more like long winded waffle, it was seriously self-indulgent. You’ll soon be able to hear all this waffle for yourself as the concert was being filmed. To hear a favourite song twice is great, to hear it three times or stopped and started multiple times was tedious (and meant other songs didn’t get sung at all). She was also sipping tea and eating lozenges just like in 2012! A number of people walked out but she also got a standing ovation from most of the audience. I came home and googled ‘Toni Childs concert review’ and thought your post was spot on and then saw that it dates from 7 years ago!!! I’m still a fan but will spend my $ on her new CDs rather than concert tickets.

Saw her last night at Caloundra events centre .I didnt know that she carried on like a pork chop before I bought tickets I even took the day off work (today) so we could stay in a motel instead of driving home at night for about an hour anyway when she sings it was brilliant but then she just rambles on and on and on and on (get the drift) my wife and I went to the bar just before the interval and decided to give her another chance after the little break some bloke behind us yelled out to start singing. Haha .we want back in after interval and she started to sing I thought oh this is more like it BUT NO she started to tell us about a dream concerning a gecko and ovaries I don’t really know what she was on about because I zoned out .some bloke yelled out again to sing and she told him to leave which he did with quite a few others. She was drinking from a thermos and chewing something and I think she was off her tits on something .so in summary if you can put up with a woman rambling on for about 30 mins with songs in-between this is for you or otherwise just buy the CDs or DVDs .

Saw the show last Saturday night. Loved it.
First half a fabulous retrospective and the second half an equally good prospective of what’s to come in the future.

  6. Gordon Ferguson

Bendigo concert 16th of June. The first half was good hearing her belt out some great songs, but the second half of the show was of a rambling nutter. We watched quite a few people walk out and almost did ourselves. We hung in for the last song. If this is any indication of where Toni is heading, we won’t be following.

There were 8 of us in my group at Toni Child’s last night in Sale, Vic.What a HUGE disappointment. So much talk about personal journeys. We had paid to hear her sing not preach.Until I read your review from 2012 I thought she had a sore throat last night hence the lolly going in and out of her mouth and the thermos of ‘tea’ but it seems it always happens. We decided we are not going to follow her in her new direction after a disappointing night and only hearing half of our fav song’too many rivers’. The sound was excruciatingly loud good.

Wow, superb blog layout! How long have you been blogging for? you make blogging look easy. The overall look of your website is excellent, let alone the content!

  21. I read with interest your take on Toni’s concert, albeit a few years since the original post.

Sorry, but, I have to disagree. If people are genuine fans, they aren’t expecting the huge entourage that accompanied her previous tours (are you going to stump up $5m hoping to make a profit as a promotor)? That’s on the cheap end of things too. She had like 30 musicians up on stage at 1 point. Multiply that alone by $1,000 per night and you’ll get an idea of costs.

If she was too sick to perform, then, maybe she should’ve cancelled, but, she hates disappointing fans.

These are designed as “intimate shows.” If you were a true fan, you would understand that she has moved on towards other areas of artistic expression. She got bored with what she was doing and then became sick.. Her choice, I would’ve thought as to how SHE wanted to run her life.

I’ve seen Dylan a few times over the years. He reminded me of my younger brother when he was too stoned to string 5 words together, but, he’s a blues/rock legend?

At least Toni is trying to “get a message out” and not rely on a back catalog like a lot of others are doing (see Alanis Morisette).

Yes I too was at the same concert on the same night. We walked out too. I agree with your comments. You might be interested to know that people who posted a bad review on Toni Childs Facebook page ( has had them removed! That’s censorship.

Yours is the only comments out there that will caution unsuspecting guests like our selves that Toni’s level of professionalism would need to be questioned – a warning to any who attend planning to attend her upcoming concert tour she is trying to tout on here Facebook.

    take care.
