I was walking down a lane in France today and I came across a small shop that had many photos of my childhood heros. As a boy growing up I had a brother who raced cars and I might add was quite good in the class and category that he competed, so I found myself following the sport and of course F1.
Those were the days of Jim Clark and Stirling Moss not to mention Jack Brabham. So to come across this small shop in this small lane in Lyon was an eye opener so I could not help myself and in I went. Well it turned out the owner was a fan of that era and was just like me. We longed for the times when the sports we followed produced real heros that we so admired and it was not all just about money.
I can remember as a young boy getting Jack Brabham ‘s autograph and telling him that I thought he would win another world championship. In my school holidays I was working in a hotel as a room service waiter and staying there for a few days was Jim Clark. I made sure it was me who took his breakfast tray to his room and when I found myself standing in his presence at 7am, and I might add he was in his P J’s, I had to babble on while his eggs got cold but he was a true gentleman and listened.
After he was killed a few months later I vowed that I would visit his birth place in Scotland and many many years later as an adult I did just that. I have to ask myself why? Well I think that no matter what age we are we need role models and or people to look up to that are in the public eye.
There was a time when we would look up to our leaders. Those elected officials who would run our country, but where in the world today can we admire a leader. Now we are not entirely blameless for in the free world it is us who elects the rubbish that work in the area of government and so many of them think they have the answers we citizens are looking for, but quite frankly no matter what side of the political fence they are on they are clueless.
I am in France at the moment and the country elected a new leader less than a year ago with all the fanfare that goes with a change but I can tell you this, he does not have any idea what he is doing and if his country is not careful it will be in the same position as Greece and many of the other European countries that are just basket cases.
In years past many countries had Royal families that we would look up to but these days there are not too many of them left either, and those who are and have produced a new younger generation to take over are less than, well how shall we put it, not up to scratch and in some cases down right rubbish. There was a time when we would look up to Church leaders but OMG what a bunch of jerks we now have as the head of our churches and I am not singling out any one religion for they are all pretty average.
We used to admire the General Managers and CEO s of big companies in days of old but look at what a bunch of self serving wankers we have running our public companies now. It is all about them and what is in it for them and F….k everyone else.
It applies to many areas of industry but lets just look at the banks and the huge salaries that they pay themselves and yet the crap job they do in so many cases and yet when they quit or are moved on walk away with large pay outs…..that is if they are not in jail and plenty are for fraud among other things.
Now I am generalizing and I know that there are some good ones out there but boy I would not want to hold my breath looking for someone in Politics or Sport or Business to look up to. Give me a Jim Clark or a Winston Churchill or a Mother Teresa any day and I will gladly bow…. oh and I might add that I think Betty Windsor had done a great job with the hand that was dealt her at a very young age. Not sure I can say the same about her kids as they are all pretty average and in one or two cases downright grubby so lets hope the next generation lifts their game.
So in what area can we now find good roles models and people to admire. Perhaps the arts. Yes Justin B you young man, could be just the one for me. I mean you look so good with your pants down around your knees and now that you have shown your soft side and are prepared to take your money to Germany with you I am thinking you could be role model.
Mind you not sure if that was such a good idea for the little monkey but I guess that is not something to take into account is it Justin, just as long as it looks good.
Of course I could always go back to sport and perhaps golf could give me a role model. After all it did produce some pretty classy gentleman with names like Hogan and Palmer, so now that he is back at number one and I am shallow, I could start to admire Tiger.
I could marry a beautiful women and have a couple of children with her yet still keep a bunch of mistresses on the side not to mention treat many with contempt and disdain and still earn millions because I will be paid by large companies whose suits want to associate with me in anyway possible.
Like I said at the start of this rant where are all the role models gone. Please give me someone to admire.
I have just finished this article about the lack of role models and people to look up to and the world has just lost a great role model.
Weather you agreed with her not not, Margaret Thatcher was one such person…..RIP Lady Thatcher
